What drivers ed is and who needs it

Drivers ed teaches the rules of the road, hazard recognition and safe habits. States set the required hours and the age cutoffs. Texas and California require teens to complete an approved course before getting a learner's permit. Florida requires both a teen course (DETS) and an adult course (TLSAE) before a first license. Adults over 24 in Texas are not required to take drivers ed1.

Aceable is an online provider approved or licensed in each of these states. The courses satisfy the classroom requirement; behind-the-wheel hours are completed separately.

Key facts

  • Texas teen (14-17): 32 hours classroom and 44 hours behind-the-wheel; TDLR sets these minimums1.
  • Texas adult (18-24): 6-hour course online; 25 and older are not required by Texas to take drivers ed1.
  • California (15-17.5): 30-hour DMV-licensed course (Course E2017)3.
  • Florida teens under 18: DETS (6 hours); Florida adults 18 and older: TLSAE (4 hours); both are required before a learner's permit2.
