Drivers ed and traffic school, 2026

What a course can do for your record

It depends on your state, your court and how often you have used it. Here is what two DMVs say.

18 months
California: traffic school once in any 18 months, if the judge offers it
Up to 4
New York: points off the record calculation with a PIRP course

What the state DMVs say

California. If you get a one-point traffic violation, the judge may offer traffic violator school. The citation then is not reported to your insurance company but stays on your driving record. You can do this once in any 18-month period1.

New York. The Point and Insurance Reduction Program can reduce up to 4 points in the DMV's record calculation and lowers the base rate of auto and motorcycle insurance premiums by 10% a year for three years. The classroom course is 320 minutes; points can be reduced only once in 18 months, and the course must be retaken every 36 months to keep the insurance reduction2.

Other states run their own programs; check your DMV or the court on your ticket before enrolling anywhere.

What to check first
  • That your court or DMV accepts the course
  • The price after any offer ends
  • How the completion certificate is sent

Before you enroll

  • Ask the court

In California the judge decides whether traffic school is offered.

  • Check the clock

Both states limit how often you can use it12.

  • Confirm acceptance

Make sure your DMV or court accepts the course before you pay.

Traffic school questions

Will traffic school remove my ticket?

It depends on the state and the court. In California it keeps a one-point citation from your insurer, but the citation stays on your driving record1.

What if I live in another state?

States run their own programs. Aceable lists courses for several states, among them Florida and Nevada4; check your DMV first.
